Facilitation is a skill which is very important at the workplace. Nowadays more than ever, facilitation is a sought after ability to help organisations move toward their vision. So what is facilitation and how can I be good at it? How can I bring my best self to the facilitation role?
Many assume that facilitation is all about the confidence to stand in front of people. They see facilitation skill as a competence intended for the extroverts. They think that it is all about getting people’s attention. Facilitation is more than that. In fact, these are not important qualities at all. Facilitation is being able to take a group of individuals from where they are now to a place where they can strive and where they can combine their individual abilities to develop healthier organisations. How people perceive good facilitation is also affected by many cultural factors. How can we facilitate in a culturally appropriate way?

At the end of the workshop, participants will gain confidence in their role as facilitators and will continue to strive to become better facilitators.

Many of us would say, “I can’t draw.” We keep on repeating this phrase in words and thoughts that we become so persuaded and allow ourselves to suppress our visual abilities. But look around you, have we not used visuals all our lives? How about the visual representation of the traffic lights or the icons they use in public places, for example, the exit signs? How about the arrows that point us where to go? Can you ignore the emojis that seem to be popping everywhere?
Visuals are more than art. It is the ability to learn and to engage in life in a new level. Sadly, the ability to use visuals in our learning has been brushed away. We tend to love texts and being linear in how we process and categorise knowledge. Even those who are naturally visual learners tend to change their ways. They diligently fold the flip chart paper to create a seamlessly linear written text.
So why use visuals in learning? Why is there a need to process knowledge not just in words but also in visual images? In a culturally and linguistically diverse world we live, visuals help with the barriers that culture and language bring. Visuals create shared understanding and help to see the bigger picture in a tangibly way. The process of learning visually brings clarity into existence. Learning becomes easier to remember. It sparks creativity and fun, making learning more interesting and engaging.
